From Stone to Sculptor
A Four-Weekend Sculpture Apprenticeship for Serious Beginners
Even an ordinary stone wants to become something greater. This is a structured, hands-on apprenticeship at my home studio in Gorham, Maine designed to take you from never having touched stone to independently designing, carving, finishing, and signing an original sculpture in your own style.
Why this exists:
I spent 25 years building training programs for organizations of every size and I’ve spent just as long carving stone. This program brings both together: real instructional structure, applied to a craft that rewards patience, presence, and your own creative instincts.
I believe two things deeply. It is never too late to become the artist you were meant to be. And Art made for joy, not for the market, is what actually leads to a rich creative life. This program is built on both.
Every piece starts as a conversation between artist and stone
What you will walk away with:
Confidence and safety with a full sculpting toolkit : angle grinder, hammer &chisel, pnematic chisel, bushing tools, and wet saw
The ability to evaluate and select the right stone for your own future work
An original, finished, signed, and photographed sculpture entirely your own design
The independence to carve on your own after the program ends
Who is this for:
Adults with a genuine creative pull towards sculpture. No prior experience needed
People who have thought “I’ve always wanted to try this” and are ready to actually start
anyone who believes it’s never too late to become the artist they were meant to be
The Four Weekends:
**Weekend 1 — Safety, Tools & Direction**
Learn every tool safely, choose your stone, and decide your creative direction.
**Weekend 2 — Core Shaping**
Begin shaping your piece and learn to let the tool do the work.
**Weekend 3 — Surface & Craft**
Sandblasting, wet polishing, and real studio problem-solving.
**Weekend 4 — Finishing**
Complete, sign, and photograph your original sculpture.
A recent student:
"After completing the in-person training, my student could create a stone sculpture in her own unique style independently — from picking out the stone, to creating the design, to signing and photographing her completed work."
— Amanda Pearson, on a recent student's four-weekend sculpture internship
Why this is not a weekend workshop:
Most stone carving classes teach a single technique in a single afternoon. This program is different — it's a full creative arc. Safety, tool fluency, material judgment, real problem-solving, and finishing each build toward genuine independence, with your own creative choices shaping the outcome throughout. You leave not having taken a class, but having become a sculptor.
